Joseph C. Baker Joseph C. (Cleveland) Baker:
The picture of Joseph on the right was taken about 1910.
Joseph was 71 years old in the picture.
Born April 16, 1839 in Russell County, Virginia.
Died April 3, 1919 in Russell County, Virginia (80 years old, Buried at Baker's Cemetery).
Joseph was having children by two women at the same time, by his wife and by his girlfriend.
(Joseph C. Baker was shot by Joseph "Hop" Hopkins Baker, his son by Mary Louisa Dean, on Baker's Ridge.)
On November 4, 1865 Joseph married his first wife, Martha (Patsy) Kilgore, in Russell County, Virginia.
Patsy was the daughter of Robert H. Kilgore and Elizabeth Hartsock-Kilgore.
Patsy was born April 28, 1844.
Patsy died October 13, 1880 from fever (Buried at Baker's Cemetery).
Joseph and Patsy had 8 children as follows:

  1. Nancy Ellen (Nannie) Elizabeth Baker:
    Born November 23, 1866 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died February 21, 1955 in Russell County, Virginia.
    On May 28, 1885 Nancy married Miles L. Marshall in Russell County, Virginia.
    Miles was the son of Miles Marshall and Emaline Elizabeth Marshall.
    Miles was born December 10, 1855 in Scott County, Virginia.
    Miles died August 2,1927 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Miles and Nancy did not have any children.
  2. Elizabeth Jane Baker:
    Born December 27, 1868 in Russell County, Virgiina.
    Died May 12, 1929 in Russell County, Virginia.
    On November 6, 1888 Elizabeth married David Alfred Spears in Russell County, Virginia.
    David was born December 25, 1857.
    David died April 23, 1943.
    David and Elizabeth are both are buried at Baker Cemetery at Baker's Ridge in Russell County, Virginia.
    David and Elizabeth had the following children:
    1. Nannie Ellen Spears married Orban J. Baldwin.
    2. Joseph Alfred Spears married Viola Cox.
    3. James Ezra Spears married Bonnie Morelock.
    4. Sarah Malida Lee Spears married Emory Cox, Jr.
      Emory Cox, Jr. was the son of Emory M. Cox, Sr. and Nancy A. Elzabeth Mann.
      Emory and Sarah had five children: Cecile, Ona, Rex, Emory, and Hazel. Cecile married James M. Quillen, who was State Senator from Kingsport, Tennessee.
    5. Charles Boyd Spears married Edia Jane Pierce.
    6. Martha Ina Belle Spears married Carl Self.
    7. Orban Kyle Spears married Mary ?
    8. Ida Ruth Spears married Horace Knight.
  3. Sarah Hannah "Ida" Baker:
    Born March 30, 1871 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died October 28, 1926 in Nicholas County, Kentucky, Locus Grove.
    On June 29, 1892 Sarah married Henry Phillip Minton in Russell County, Virginia.
    Henry was born December 6, 1872 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Henry died April 21, 1911 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.
  4. Martha Caroline Baker:
    Born March 14, 1873 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died March 10, 1931 in Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Virginia.
    On June 15, 1898 Martha married John William Horne.
    John was the son of Nicholas Johnson Horne, Jr. and Virginia Caroline Fugate.
    John was born November 27, 1875 in Coeburn, Wise County, Virginia.
    John died November 26, 1946 in Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Virginia.
    John and Martha are both are buried at Horne Cemetery in Fort Blackmore, Virginia.
    John and Martha had 2 children as follows:
    1. Ida Mae Horne:
      Born October 28, 1899 at Coeburn, Wise County, Virginia.
      Died March 3, 1991 at Trevilians, Louisa, Virginia.
      First marriage on March 25, 1920 to Charles Dunn Henegar, son of Andrew Moten Henegar and Jane M. Landreth.
      Charles and Ida had 2 children: Glenn Moses, and Helen Leslie who married Charles Douthitt Peoples.
      Second marriage to Percy Wilburn.
      Third marriage to William Bradley Barnette.
    2. Jettie Virginia Horne:
      Born October 3, 1903 at Coeburn, Wise County, Virginia.
      Died December 8, 1986 at Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia.
      On October 24, 1932 Jettie married Loy Otto Johnson, son of John Tivis Johnson and Sarah Easter Johnson, at Nickelsville, VA.
      Loy was born April 6, 1907 at Castlewood, Virigina.
      Loy died October 21, 1998 and is buried at Temple Hill Cemetery.
      Loy and Jettie had four children: Raymond Artis, Farrell Howard, Ferne Bernice, and Giles Marvin.
  5. Robert J. Baker:
    Born June 20, 1875.
    Died November 1877 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Robert may be buried in one of the four unmarked graves at Baker's Cemetery.
  6. Charles Hasten Baker:
    Born April 12, 1877 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died March 23, 1960.
    On August 17, 1910 Charles married Lillie (Lilly) Fortner in Scott County, Virginia.
    Lillie was born March 7, 1894 in Scott County, Virginia.
    Lillie died May 7, 1974.
  7. James Nathanial Baker:
    Born April 2, 1880 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died January 7, 1969.
    On December 27, 1904 James married Ida B. Nickels in Scott County, Virginia.
    Ida was the daughter of John Henry Nickels and Elizabeth Muncus.
    Ida was born August 22, 1882 in Scott County, Virginia.
    Ida died July 21, 1977.
    James and Ida are both buried at Temple Hill Cemetery.
    James and Ida had two children:
    1. Orbie B. Baker: Born November 20, 1905. Died June 21, 1995. Married Ruth Hash. Children Sharon Ruth, Shelia Leigh.
    2. Bertha Baker: Born August 29, 1909. Married Claude Castle on March 14, 1931. Claude was born Oct. 17, 1903 and died Jan. 25, 1978. Both buried Temple Hill Cemetery. Two Children: Iva Nelle Castle and Swanson Castle.
  8. Pollie Joe Baker:
    Born April 1, 1879.
    Died April 1, 1879 the same day.
    Buried at Baker's Cemetery on Baker's Ridge in Russell County, Virginia.

Mary was born 1859 in Scott County, Virginia.
Mary died 1936 (Buried at Baker's Cemetery).
Joseph C. Baker was shot by Joseph "Hop" Hopkins Baker, his son by Mary Louisa Dean, on Baker's Ridge.

    Born June 10, 1874 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died December 24, 1960 in Eolia, Kentucky.
    On February 23, 1899 Joseph married Mary Hannah Elizabeth Porter.
    Mary was born April 24, 1883.
    Mary died March 9, 1963 and is buried in Eolia, Kentucky.
    Joseph "Hop" moved his family to Kentucy after shooting his father.
    According to family, Joseph "Hop" spent time in jail for the shooting.
    The picture of Mary and Hop on the right was taken about 1952.
  2. Bobby J. Baker:
    Born June 22, 1875.
    Died November 21 , 1877 and is buried at Baker's Cemetery.
  3. George Sherman Baker:
    Born about 1876 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died August 23, 1888 in Russell County, Virginia. He died from flux according to his death certificate.
    George may be buried at Baker Cemetery in one of the unmarked graves.
  4. Russie Kilbe Baker:
    Born February 25, 1878 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died January 8, 1942 in Russell County, Virginia.
    On August 26, 1912 Russie married Robert Martin Johnson in Russell County, Virginia.
    Robert was born May 3, 1873.
    Robert died December 19, 1945.
    Robert and Russie are both are buried at Baker's Cemetery with a marker.
  5. John B. Baker:
    Born May 5, 1880 in Russell County, Virginia.
    On September 21, 1899 Johh's first marriage was to Ida E. Riner.
    On November 4, 1904 John's second marriage was to Abby Fields.
  6. Jasper Fleetwood Baker:
    Born March 18, 1882 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died August 25, 1888 in Russell County, Virginia (Age 6 years, 4 months, 17 days).
    Died from flux according to his death certificate.
    Jasper may be buried in one of the unmarked graves at Baker's Cemetery.
  7. David Thomas Baker:
    Born May 24, 1884.
    Died May 14, 1945.
    David married Rose M. ?.
    Rose was born September 7, 1894.
    Rose died November 11, 1967.
    David and Rose are both are buried at Baker's Cemetery with a marker.
  8. Mary Bell Zorah Baker:
    Born February 23, 1887.
    Died March 21 1976 in Russell County, Virginia.
    On December 14, 1905 Mary married Hugh C. Vicars in Russell County, Virginia.
    Hugh was born December 13, 1880.
    Hugh died September 27, 1970.
    Hugh was the son of Sam Vicars and Virginia Keith.
