John Baker:
Born February 4, 1845 in Russell County, Virginia.
Died sometime between 1880 and 1885 (he was stabbed).
On February 20, 1864 John married Mary "Polly" Minton in Russell County, Virginia.
Mary was born in 1844.
Mary died Febuary 19, l925.
Mary is buried in Worrick Cemetery in Lincoln County, West Virginia.
In the 1920 Census of Laurel Hill, Lincoln County, West Virginia, Mary was a widow, age 76 and could not read.
John Baker and Mary Minton had 9 chldren as follows:

  1. Nathanial Baker:
    Born 1864.
    Died before 1885 and he had a least one son.
  2. Highley Baker:
    Born 1865.
    Died January 21, 1884 from fever.
    Highley married William M. Hamilton.
    William was born in Scott County, Virginia.
    William died 1929.
  3. James Baker:
    Born 1867.
    On May 5, 1885 James married Nancy M. Meade.
    Nancy was born in 1870.
  4. Harry Baker:
    Born February 1, 1868.
    Died young.
  5. Nancy Devisey Baker:
    Born February 29, 1869.
    Died February 20, 1940.
    On August 6, 1883 Nancy married James William Hamilton.
    James was born March 9, 1858.
    James died December 29, 1937.
    James and Nancy's Marriage license says: Nancy 14, from Russell Co. and James 23, from Scott Co.
  6. William Joseph "Joe" Baker:
    Born November 11, 1869 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died May 1, 1936 in West Virginia.
    James Baker left William ten dollars in his will.
    Willilam is buried at Worrick Cemetery in Lincoln County, West Virginina.
    On August 4, 1891 William married Elizabeth Jane McClellan in Wise County, Virginia.
    Elizabeth was born May 24, 1874.
    Elizabeth died December 31, 1933.
    Elizabeth was the daughter of Marquis "Mark" McClellan and Frances Smith-McClellan.
  7. Sarah (Sally or Sallie) Baker:
    Born November 21, 1872 or 1874.
    Died October 1938 in Wise County, Virginia.
    James Baker left Sarah ten dollars in his will.
    Sarah married William "Tip" M. McClellan.
    William was born September 10, 1870.
    William died February 3, 1926 Wise County, Virginia.
  8. John Baker, Jr.:
    Born 1876.
    Died March 22, 1878 (Age 2 years old).
  9. Infant Son:
    Born March 26, 1878.
    Died March 26, 1878 the same day.
In the Will of James Baker, he states that his son, John Baker, had four illegimate Children. After many years of research those four children have been identified, and their mother is Lavina (Vina) Minton, who was a sister of his wife Mary "Polly" Minton, and was therefore his sister-in-law.
Lavina was born in 1849.
Lavina was married twice but never to John Baker.
On April 22, 1878 Lavina married John Lewis.
On April 10, 1889 Lavina married Firman Peregeon. Firman was 63 and Lavina was 40, as stated on their marriage license, which also states that they were widow and widower.

John Baker and Lavina (Vina) Minton had 4 illegitimate children as follows:
  1. Amanda Minton:
    Born 1876.
    On April 26, 1892 Amanda married Frank Holt, the son of Bird Holt.
    According to their marriage license she was 16 and he was 22 and a farmer.
    According to their marriage certificate dated May 5, 1989, it listed Mary's mother as Vina Minton and no father's name was shown.
    On March 29, 1896 her husband Frank and their 3 year old son William Holt got drowned according to death records.
    On May 8, 1898 Mary married Nelson Austin in Russell County, Virginia.
  2. Mary Elizabeth Minton:
    Born 1878.
    Died June 3, 1889 (Age 11 years, 1 month, 24 days).
    Died from typhoid. On one record it list her mother's name as Elvira Minton.
    It says death was reported by Uncle R. J. Minton, which would be Richard Minton, Lavina (Vina) Minton's brother.
  3. Samuel C. Minton:
    Born May 13, 1879.
  4. George E. Minton:
    Born January 17, 1881 in Russell County, Virginia.
    Died May 24, 1967 in Letcher County, Virginia.
    On July 7, 1902 George married Lillie Mace in Wise County, Virginia.
    In the Letcher County Census of 1930 George was 49 and a superintendant of a Coal Mine.
