During hard times it is possible to make beer, wine, and liquor at home. Of these three alcoholic beverages, wine is the preferred hard times beverage for the following reasons:
- Wine is much easier to make than either beer or liquor.
- Wine making requires very little equipment - just a fermentation bottle and either a 9-inch or a 12-inch diameter balloon.
- The fermentation temperature does not need to be precisely controlled.
- Wine (12%) has an average alcohol content that is higher than beer (6%) but lower than liquor (40%).
- Wine can be made from a variety of different fruits, grapes, and berries, including wild blackberries, raspberries, and huckleberries (wild blueberries).
- Wine can be made from the flower blossoms of some weeds that grow wild and abundantly in nature, such as dandelions and kudzu.
- Wine can be made from sweet sugar beet water.
- Wine can be made using ordinary bread yeast, or wild yeast that is already present on the fruit.
- During hard times it is a good idea to remember that “wine makes glad the heart of man.” (Psalm 104:15) A little wine may help to take your mind of the depressing situations that exist all around you.
For all the above reasons wine is the alcoholic beverage of choice during a hard times tragedy event.

How to Order This Special Topic Article
How much does a bottle of wine cost? ... $5? ... $10? ... More?
How would you feel if you invested your time and your grapes (or fruit) in an effort to make wine and then discovered several months (or years) later that the taste of your homemade wine was disgusting and you could not drink it?
I can make the above statement because twelve-years ago I personally experienced the heart-breaking feeling of having to pour out a one-gallon bottle of wine that was completely unacceptable after waiting two-years for it to mature and improve in flavor. The homemade wine making recipe I followed at that time resulted in a complete disaster.
However, gradually over the years I have been able to refine my wine making process and I can now make good quality wine every time without using any extra wine making chemicals. I can even make good wine using the natural yeast that is present on the outside of the fruit. My article explains how to do this in simple, easy to follow steps, and it is illustrated with pictures.
The information and suggestions in my article could easily save you more than $10 in wine making supplies in a very short period of time. And it could also save you from having to discard a bottle of ruined homemade wine after you have waited a year for it to mature.
The wine making recipes available on the internet usually assume that you have some previous knowledge of wine making. Therefore, those recipes omit some of the critical steps and information necessary to make good wine. And if you don't have that "common knowledge base" and you simply follow those homemade wine recipes then you may be very disappointed in the quality of your wine one year from now.
My Homemade Wine Recipes assume that you have no previous experience in wine making.
Therefore my wine making instructions include 27 steps:
- Each step explains and defines any special terms or words that are used.
- Also, when appropriate, each step explains why that step is necessary in the wine making process.
- My recipes also include some information that is not available anywhere on the internet or in any wine making book.
I have taken the time to share everything I have learned about wine making over the years, including the steps I successfully developed as a result of "trial and error" while making wine and trying something new. (I have omitted all the stuff that didn't work.)
