Food Inflation Price Index for the Year 2009

Food Prices The following Food Inflation Price Index is based on the Total Retail Cost of 60 different food items in a one-year emergency food supply for one-adult.

The original retail price for each food item was established on January 9, 2008. The Total Retail Cost for the entire one-year emergency food supply on January 9, 2008 was $1,385 in the Southeastern United States.

The total cost of the one-year emergency food supply increased in price by 15.3% in twelve-months from January 9, 2008 ($1,385) to January 3, 2009 ($1,597).

The total cost of the following one-year emergency food supply increased in price by $97 in twelve-months from January 3, 2009 ($1,597) to January 4, 2010 ($1,694).

The following table shows the change each month in the Total Retail Cost of the one-year emergency food supply since January 3, 2009.

There were no "significant" price changes from December 2, 2009 to January 4, 2010.
  1. Four items increased in price by a small amount and two item decreased in price by a small amount.
  2. The total net change for the entire month was an increase in price of two-dollars.

Comments about "significant" price changes from November 2, 2009 to December 2, 2009:
  1. A 6-ounce can of Bumble Bee Brand Tuna increased in price from $1.45 to $1.50 per 6-ounce can.
  2. A 36-ounce bottle of Log Cabin Brand Syrup increased in price from $1.96 to $2.50 per 36-ounce bottle.
  3. A 32-ounce box of Velvetta Brand Cheese decreased in price from $5.54 to $4.98 per 32-ounce box.
Comments about "significant" price changes from October 3, 2009 to November 2, 2009:
  1. A 15-ounce can of Chili with Beans increased in price from $1.16 to $1.25 per 15-ounce can.
  2. An 32-ounce box of Instant Potatoes increased in price from $2.28 to $2.50 per 32-ounce box.
  3. A 1-pound box of butter decreased in price from $2.13 to $1.88 per 1-pound box.

  7. A 5-ounce can of Vienna Sausage increased in price from $0.46 to $0.47 per 5-ounce can.
  8. A 6-ounce can of Tomato Paste decreased in price from $0.53 to $0.52 per 6-ounce can.

  8. A 10-ounce can of Baking Powder increased in price from $1.04 to $1.16 per 10-ounce can.
  9. A 2-ounce bottle of Vanilla Extract increased in price from $3.64 to $4.58 per 2-ounce bottle.
  10. A 12-ounce can of Roast Beef decreased in price from $3.28 to $3.18 per 12-ounce can.
  11. A 16-ounce box of Corn Starch decreased in price from $1.00 to $0.98 per 16-ounce box.

  8. A 2.3-ounce jar of Cayenne Red Pepper decreased in price from $4.28 to $$3.92 per 2.3-ounce jar.
There were no "significant" price changes from March 3, 2009 to April 2, 2009.
  1. Three items increased in price by a small amount and one item decreased in price by a small amount.
  2. The total net change for the entire month was an increase in price of five-dollars.

Comments about "significant" price changes from February 3, 2009 to March 3, 2009:
  1. A 32-ounce box of Velvetta Brand Cheese decreased in price from $5.98 to $5.54 per box.
  2. A 1-pound box of Butter decreased in price from $2.54 to $2.12 per 1-pound box.
  3. Three items increased in price just a little but not enough to be considered "significant."
Comments about "significant" price changes from January 3, 2009 to February 3, 2009:
  1. A 3-pound can of Crisco Shortening decreased in price from $4.64 to $4.24 per 3-pound can.

  6. A 16-ounce box of Corn Starch increased in price from $0.77 to $0.82 per 16-ounce box.
  7. The average price of Canned Vegetables increased in price from $0.58 to $0.63 per 15-ounce can.
