Introduction

Bank Stock Certificate On my March 2010 bank statement the following notice was printed at the very top of my bank statement where it could not be missed:

Discussion

Question: If your bank unexpectedly freezes your desperately needed pay check deposits for seven business/banking days (which equals at least nine calendar days) can you pay your mortgage or credit card bills on time?
Answer: No.

Question: If your bank unexpectedly bounces your mortgage and credit card payments and your bank charges you a really high fee for writing bad checks then who benefits?
Answer: The banks who would not let you have your money so you could pay your bills on time.

Question: If you must also pay a significant late fee penalty because you could not pay your mortgage or credit card bills on time then who benefits?
Answer: The banks who would not let you have your money so you could pay your bills on time.

Question: If your interest rate is also increased because you could not pay your bills on time then who benefits?
Answer: The banks who would not let you have your money so you could pay your bills on time.

Question: If one day you try to use your bank debit card to buy groceries or gas, and you are told you can't buy groceries or gas because your debit card payment has been refused, how will you feel?
Answer: Betrayed.

Question: Is this a bank holiday?
Answer: No.

Question: If you have money in your bank and your bank is open but your bank won't let you have your money, then is this essentially the same exact thing as a bank holiday except the bank is open?
Answer: Yes.

Question: Will it create the same exact conditions as a bank holiday?
Answer: Yes.

Question: When the chaos and destruction begins can your bank claim that it was not their fault since they were open and therefore they are completely innocent?
Answer: Insert whatever answer you believe is appropriate.

Conclusion

Money in a Mousetrap You may or may not have noticed the word cash in the bank's new policy at the top of this page.

The bank is now telling me that if I deposit cash in my bank account then the bank now has the right to hold my cash for 7 business days before the bank will let me have it back.

In the past cash was cash and it was immediately accepted as cash and it did not take any time to be verified by the banking system.

Now I am being told that cash is no longer cash and it is the same as an "out-of-state" check that may take up to seven business days to clear the banking system.

I can only deduce that my bank believes that I am stupid and there is no way I could possibly understand their "new sophisticated banking procedures."

However, I do understand the meaning of the word "bankrupt" and I know that the first of the two root words in the word "bankrupt" is the word bank.
