Additonal Information About Some of the Above Ancestors

Francis Atkins, Sr. served in the American Militia during the Colonial Wars (French and Indian War, 1754 to 1763), Hening's Statues at Large, Vol. 7, Laws of Virginia, Page 224.

Francis Atkins, Jr. was a prosperous planter, almost 6 foot tall, overweight, with a florid complexion, darkish hair, deep blue eyes, projecting and heavy eye-brows, a large nose, firmly set mouth, and of a jovial disposition.

Jane Yeldell-Atkins was the daugher of Robert Yeldell, Sr. and Phoebe (Maiden Name Unknown).

Francis Atkins, Jr. and his wife, Jane Yeldell-Atkins, both had a reasonable education and lived upright, respectable lives.


John Thomas Atkins:
Born November 6, 1845 in South Carolina
Died January 31, 1914 (Age 68, Calhoun, Alabama)
A Corporal in the Alabama II Corps. Confederate States of America

John was a teenage Confederate Civil War Soldier. He was a Corporal in the Alabama II Corps C.S.A. In the last year of the Civil War (1865), he was wounded in a battle near Chattanooga, Tennessee and he earned the Purple Heart Medal.

On March 28, 1867 John married his first wife, Martha Holllingsworth-Atkins: July 9, 1849 to Dec. 9, 1889.
John and Martha had four children as follows:
Daughter - Laura Atkins-Lancaster: 1868 to 1949, Married a Mr. Lancaster.
Daughter - Annie Atkins-Kershaw: May 8, 1872 to May 26, 1935, Married C. G. Kershaw.
Son - James H. Evans Atkins: July 9, 1874 to March 1894.
Son - Leomas H. Atkins: Dec. 25, 1876 to March 26, 1942.

Annie Atkins married a Mr. C. G. Kershaw and they had a son, Royce G. Kershaw. In 1964 John’s grandson, Royce, voluntarily cleaned up Union Cemetery and then he started a Trust Fund for its perpetual care.

John's first wife, Martha, died in 1889 but John lived another 25 years.

In 1891, John Thomas Atkins married his second wife, Rosa Jane Lester-Atkins: Oct. 24, 1864 to Aug. 18, 1947.
John and Rosa had six children as follows:
Son - Thomas Elisha Atkins: Nov. 7, 1893 to Aug. 3, 1973, Married Ola Mae Jennings.
Son - Jesse Clifton Atkins: Jan. 17, 1895 to Oct. 19, 1963, Married Virginia May Jarvis.
Daughter - Estell Ophelia Atkins: Jan. 1897 to 1918, Married E. L. Dyer.
Son - Lemuel Minus Atkins: 1899 to 1984, Married Flora (Maiden Name Unknown).
Daughter - Willie Inez Atkins: 1902, Married L. D. McLemor.
Daughter - Alice Columbia Atkins: 1903 to 1991, Married Ed West.

John died in 1914 and he is buried at Union United Methodist Church Cemetery between Anniston and Gadsden, Alabama with his first wife and their four children.

John's second wife, Rosa Jane Lester-Atkins, lived to the age of 83 and she is buried in the “Atkins” plot at Four Mile United Methodist Church between Anniston and Jacksonville, Alabama.

As a teenage Confederate Civil War Soldier, John carried a New Testament Bible with him during the Civil War and he still owned that same Bible when he died at the age of 68. John was a man of faith, courage, and integrity. If you are one of John's descendants, then you probably inherited those family traits.
